Erling Haaland is ready to play when Manchester City host Liverpool on Saturday after returning to training following an injury sustained on international duty.

The Premier League’s top scorer suffered an ankle injury during Norway’s match against the Faroe Islands last Thursday. He later withdrew from the squad ahead of the Euro 2024 qualifier against Scotland.

“The injury is not serious, but he is in so much pain and is somewhat limited in his function that the match against Scotland unfortunately comes a little too early,” Norwegian team doctor Ola Sand said last Saturday.

Haaland returned to Manchester for treatment earlier this week and the striker was seen in photos from City training shared on Thursday.

ESPN reports that the 23-year-old is expected to be fit when Liverpool arrive at the Etihad for the early kick-off on Saturday.

Pep Guardiola will provide a further update on his striker during his pre-match press conference on Friday afternoon.

Nathan Aké also trained with the team on Thursday. The Dutch international missed the 4-4 draw against Chelsea before the international break due to an undisclosed injury, but looked fully connected to the rest of the group on the training pitch.

Mateo Kovacic and Mathues Nunes are the other injured for John Stones and City.

City top the Premier League ahead of Saturday’s heavyweight match, one point ahead of Liverpool and Arsenal.

Liverpool have now received a boost of their own with four players returning to training today.

Joe Gomez, Ryan Gravenberch, Curtis Jones and Ibrahima Konate have all returned to training after missing the win over Brentford before the international break.

Gomez was missing due to an unexplained problem when Gravenberch was ruled out in the summer due to a knee injury.

Jones was forced to take part in the Europa League defeat to Toulouse and the win over the Bees due to a hamstring injury, while Konate struggled with a hamstring problem that forced him out of the France squad during the international break.
