The Tigres rescued a 1-1 draw at home against América on Thursday, in the first leg of the final of the Apertura-2023 Mexican soccer tournament, played at the Universitario de Nuevo León stadium (north).

América wasted the first clear opportunity in the 28th minute when full-back Miguel Layún appeared in the Tigres’ area from the right sector and finished a play with a deflected shot.

At 45+3, Chilean Diego Valdés also forgave the cats with a frontal shot inside the area that went to the side of the left post.

As soon as the second half began, at 46, Argentine goalkeeper Nahuel Guzmán saved the Tigres by deflecting with one hand a shot that Colombian Julián Quiñones connected from outside the area.

Two minutes later, Quiñones caused a penalty in favor of América when he received a kick from defender Jesús Angulo in the area.

Henry Martín took the penalty in the 51st minute and made it 1-0 for the ‘Águilas’ with a touch to the left of ‘Patón’ Guzmán, who launched himself to the opposite side.

The Tigres tied the score at 71 when Sebastián Córdova executed a corner kick from the left, the ball went to the American area where Ozziel Herrera scored 1-1 with a stunning header.

The second leg will be played on Sunday at the Azteca stadium in Mexico City at 7:30 p.m. local time (01:30 GMT on Monday).

If there is a tie in the overall score, extra time will be played, and if equality persists, the winner will be determined in penalty shootouts.
