Pep Guardiola provided an injury update on John Stones on Wednesday after he limped off the pitch in the first half of Manchester City’s 3-1 win over Everton.

Stones was substituted after just 43 minutes and is expected to be sidelined again with an ankle injury.

The England international defender has made just eight Premier League appearances this season after suffering a hip injury at the start of the campaign.

“It doesn’t look good but we’ll see,” Guardiola told Amazon Prime after City’s win at Goodison Park. “It’s his ankle.”

In his post-match press conference, Guardiola admitted he did not know how serious Stone’s injury was, but added: “Sometimes there are seasons like this.”

“It’s starting to get bad and then it just gets worse. Hopefully the damage isn’t extensive and he can come back soon.”

Meanwhile, Guardiola also spread the news that Kevin De Bruyne could be in line, with the Belgian having been sidelined since the first game of the season with a hamstring injury, as has Erling Haaland, who has missed the last three top-flight games.

‘[Haaland is] “I train alone,” Guardiola said. “He feels better, but he is not yet training with the team.”

“Kevin trains with the team. He’s close. But he was tired yesterday and we have to be careful.

“The injury was serious, so we are taking it step by step.” But he trains with us. He is so positive. “I want him to play the next match, but it is important to keep him fit for a long time.”
