Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Dominik Szoboszlai suffered a hamstring injury during Liverpool’s win over Newcastle United.

The Reds recorded a 4-2 victory over Eddie Howe’s side, with Mohamed Salah scoring twice and providing an assist at Anfield.

The win leaves Liverpool three points clear at the top of the Premier League, but will be without Salah in the coming weeks as the striker takes part in the Africa Cup of Nations with Egypt.

Klopp could also be without Szoboszlai after it was confirmed the midfielder suffered a blow in a “super intense” game on Monday night.

“Dominik Szoboszlai has a thigh injury, we hope it is not too serious,” Klopp told BBC Sport.

“Other players felt it too.” It’s super intense. But if you want to win football matches, there is no alternative.”

Szoboszlai was replaced by Ryan Gravenberch after 64 minutes, one of three changes Klopp made to the match at that point.

The Liverpool manager added in his post-match press conference: “We wanted to get him away, that was the plan.”

“Unfortunately it was a minute too late. He felt his thigh muscles and to what extent we don’t know.”

While the extent of Szoboszlai’s injury is not yet clear, Jamie Carragher hopes the Hungary international will be deployed in a more advanced role and replace Salah while the latter is on international duty.

“It will be very interesting to see who he puts in that position,” Carragher told Sky Sports.

“Many Liverpool strikers are right-footed.” They look good on the left, Diogo Jota, Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo can all do it, but no one seems to have the right balance to play on the right.

“A few options could be Harvey Elliot. I think he is more of a midfielder. He lacks the speed to play in the front three, but he could do it.

“But also Szoboszlai.” With the return of Alexis Mac Allister, Liverpool now have plenty of options in midfield, as Szoboszlai played in that position for his former club.

‘But you can’t replace him [Salah’s] “Setting goals will be very difficult.”
