The ceiling is very high: why Ignacio Buse and the Peruvian team are excited despite the defeat | CHRONICLE

The feeling of a nation came and went at each rally point, emotions grew with each drive and faded with unforced errors. Ignacio Buse fought at every moment and made Peru watch tennis on a Sunday night and have hope until the last game.

Unfortunately, despite the enormous effort, Peru only came close to glory. The Bicolor team fell 3-2 to Chile and was on the verge of the Davis Cup Finals. And this time we were closer than ever. Because after Saturday’s 1-1, the duo of the Huertas del Pino brothers put us 2-1 up and no one kept us up at night.

But yes, Nicolás Jarry appeared to take advantage of Varillas’ bad moment and beat him without problems 6-2 and 6-4. And then it was Tabilo’s time, who had to fight to overcome the pleasant surprise called Ignacio Buse to beat him 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Taking the series to the fifth game was unthinkable in the previous one. Chile with its three top 100 tennis players presented themselves as clear favorites, but if before Varillas knew how to lead us, this time it was Buse who kept us in the series. His victory against the top 20 Jarry on Saturday and reaching the third set against Tabilo speak of a rapid evolution of the 19-year-old Peruvian tennis player.

Just last year he gave us a junior doubles final at Roland Garros, along with Gonzalo Bueno. This year, both are already key pieces on the Davis team.

Lucho Horna’s clarity also for decision making. He opted for Buse and did not disappoint in the game. He chose the Huertas del Pino and they solved his point.

A team with two 19-year-old players (Bueno and Buse), two 28-year-olds (Varillas and Conner) and one 30-year-old (Arklon), It dictates that Peru has a lot of ceiling, both on the ATP or Challenger circuit, and in the Davis Cup itself.

—Exciting doubles—

The feeling that the Huertas del Pino brothers gave is not that of a couple playing Davis together for the first time. Yes, both have always been a duo on the circuit, but in the national team tournament yesterday they stood together for the first time and did so at a high level.

With their 7-5 and 6-3 over the Chilean duo of Tabilo and Barrios, they did nothing more than demonstrate that the title achieved two weeks ago at the Challenger 50 in Buenos Aires I is part of that evolution and consolidation.

Arklon had teamed up in previous series with Sergio Galdos and Juan Pablo Varillas, but Lucho Horna wisely decided to give them free play this time with his brother and they played to their heart’s content.

“We have been working a lot as a team, that is the key,” Arklon highlights what he feels about the national team. “There is a mix of youth and experience and that is also the key,” he adds.

Arklon turns 30 in July and Conner turns 29 in December. They have a lot to grow in this sport and continue contributing to the Bicolor.

—What’s coming—

Before thinking about what may happen in September in World Group I, the Peruvian team will return to its individual paths, each one in their own circuit. Surely the one we will see the most live is Juan Pablo Varillas, since the number racket is playing in the South American tour and this is broadcast on ESPN.

Juanpa will return to the clay courts and his first tournament starts tomorrow with the ATP 250 in Córdoba, where he makes his debut against the German Yannick Hanfmann, 58 ATP. The Peruvian hopes to return to the path of victory, since this year he has not been able to celebrate yet.

Then he is alternate 1 of the ATP 250 in Buenos Aires, where he will also play doubles curiously with the German Hanfmann as a partner. Continuing with the South American tour he will make his appearance at the ATP 500 in Rio de Janeiro and the ATP 250 in Santiago, both already in the main draw.

The activity for Buse moves to Europe. The Peruvian continues his progress on the fast courts and will compete in the M25 Vila Real de Santo Antonio that begins next Monday. He will surely also compete in the second tournament at the same venue, starting on the 19th of this month.

It is important that Nacho continues adding sets on hard courts, since it has been shown that he moves well on this surface and it helps the Peruvian team to establish itself under these conditions.

For the other members of the team, the M25 I and II come to Punta del Este (Uruguay), both for Gonzalo Bueno and the Huertas del Pino brothers. This tournament is played on clay, a favorite place for nationals.
