Rosario Central defeated Peñarol 1-0 this Thursday in an intense match played at the Gigante de Arroyito Stadium and with 3 points they took the lead in Group G of the Copa Libertadores alongside Atlético Mineiro. The Brazilians beat Caracas 1-4 in their debut, which thus lies in the basement.

OLIVERA INCIDENT ROSARIO CENTRAL VS PEÑAROL

The experienced defender Carlos Quintana scored the only goal of the game with an unorthodox scissors in the second added minute of the first half. Two hours before the start of the match, incidents were reported upon the arrival of the Uruguayan team’s fans.

The team led by Miguel Ángel Russo was able to go ahead after 20 minutes with a shot by Colombian Jaminton Campaz that ended up in the hands of goalkeeper Guillermo De Amores.

Rosario Central had two other options with long-range shots from Agustín Sández and Ignacio Malcorra, while Peñarol had a header from Gastón Ramírez in the 31st minute that passed near Jorge Broun’s left post.

Before the break, Facundo Mallo won a corner kick and crashed the ball into the horizontal. The rebound was captured by Quintana, who with his acrobatics nestled the ball in the back of the net.

In the complement, Peñarol had two clear options led by Maximiliano Silvera. The first one that went wide and the second one after hitting it before Broun’s exit required a reaction from Carlos Quintana to take it over the goal.

In the last minutes the Carbonero pushed but could not reach the tie and the ‘Canalla’ knew how to defend itself to win.

On the second day of this Group C, Rosario Central will visit Atlético Mineiro in Belo Horizonte and Peñarol will host Caracas in Montevideo.
