The Dutchman Max Verstappen won Saturday’s sprint race of the Chinese Grand Prix against the British Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes and his Mexican Red Bull teammate Sergio Pérez to consolidate his lead in the Formula 1 World Championship.

The current world champion started fourth but ended up 13 seconds ahead of his pursuers in the 19-lap race held at the Shanghai International Circuit.

“The first laps were frenetic,” said Verstappen, who scored eight points for the World Championship.

“The wind changed a lot which made driving difficult. Once we solved it, we were fine,” added the three-time world champion.

Ferrari pair Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz placed fourth and fifth respectively after surviving an exciting battle for third place on the podium with Perez and Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso, who retired on the penultimate lap with a puncture.

The man on pole, the British Lando Norris (McLaren), could only finish sixth, ahead of his teammate Oscar Piastri and his compatriot George Russel (Mercedes).
