“My body is free in the pool”: the golden journey of Beatrice Hess, paraswimming champion

She could take the bus: the stop is right in front of her house, 20 kilometers from Colmar (Haut-Rhin). Fearing the rain, she chose to come by car and installed a carbon wheelchair in the car herself. “I’m still independent!” she cries as we try to help her through the lobby of the Grand Hotel Bristol where we are meeting. At 62, with short hair and a cheerful face, Beatrice Hess has not lost her dynamism, despite a handicap that has hampered her movements since birth. Suffering from Pompe disease, a form of multiple sclerosis that is also degenerative, the Alsatian cat cannot use her legs.

And yet, whoever still dreams of qualifying for the next Winter Games in paracurling has the best French record in the history of the Games. From 1984 in New York to 2004 in Athens, she won 26 medals, including 20 gold. The swimmer’s career, which continues to work to change society’s views on “difference”, follows the development of the Paralympic Games, which will be held in Paris from August 28 to September 8. She makes us relive the brightest moments.
