Paris 2024 Olympics: ‘tough’ qualifying tournament in Istanbul, similar to final fight for games

This is the last chance meeting of French wrestlers who will be able to take part in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Twelve wrestlers will be on site from this Thursday until Sunday during the World Qualifying Olympic Tournament (TQO) in Istanbul, Turkey. They will have to finish on the podium in their category to win the precious Olympic sesame.

Who will join Kumba Larroque and Mamadassa Sylla, the only wrestlers to have won an Olympic berth so far? The former qualified thanks to her bronze medal at the last World Championships in Belgrade, Serbia last September, while the latter qualified during the European TQO in Baku, Azerbaijan last month.

All wrestlers who took part in the first TQO in Baku have been renewed, with the exception of Ibrahim Ghanem, the current world champion in the Greco-Roman non-Olympic category up to 72 kg. The latter took advantage of Johnny Boer’s retirement for personal reasons during the last TQO to secure a spot in the 77kg Greco-Roman wrestling division, but lost in the first round.

To determine the identity of the wrestler competing in TQO in Istanbul, Blues staff arranged a test match between the two fighters. After becoming the winner, Ibrahim Ganem finally gave up after suffering a concussion during a training camp in Hungary last week. So Johnny Boer will replace him.

Amélie Douarre and Pauline Lecarpentier have a great map to play with.

In freestyle wrestling, fighters went to the USA to train before completing their training at Insep. Zelimkhan Khadzhiev returns after a four-year disqualification for doping. The former junior world champion, who competed at the 2016 Rio Olympics, will try to qualify for Paris in the 74kg weight category.

Among the women who left for training in Japan last week, Amelie Douard in the up to 62 kg weight category and Pauline Lecarpentier in the up to 76 kg weight category have good trump cards. In Baku they missed out on Olympic qualification by a hair, losing in the semi-finals. The Greco-Roman wrestling competition will be held on Thursday and Friday, the women’s competition on Friday and Saturday, and the freestyle wrestling competition on Saturday and Sunday.

“This last TQO will be very difficult because all continents are represented,” announces Yvon Riemer, general manager of the Paris 2024 division. The chance of him losing the match and being selected with the opportunity to win bronze is slim. medal and therefore qualify for the Olympic Games. The goal is to obtain Olympic qualification in style (Greco-Roman, freestyle and women’s). We have potential, but we will need to perform at our best on race day and also have a little luck in the draw. There are always surprises in this kind of competition. “Tricolors should take advantage of this.
