A military parade on Red Square in Moscow, wakes in schools… Russia is preparing to celebrate “Victory Day” this Thursday, even if the celebrations will be limited due to security concerns related to the war in Ukraine, as well as the attack by Moscow.
Every year on May 9, Russia commemorates the surrender of Nazi Germany during World War II, signed in Berlin on May 8, 1945 at 23:00 or 1:00 Moscow time. “This is a real patriotic holiday in Russia, which has two dimensions: it is a reason for pride, because Russians believe that they took a decisive part in the victory over Nazi Germany, but also a reason for pain, because all families have part of their ancestors , which was consumed by conflict,” explains David Turtry, lecturer at the Catholic Institute of Higher Studies (ICES) and associate researcher at Inalco.
