Paris 2024 Olympics: Alexis Lebrun in the WTT Contender final in Taiyuan, valuable points from a Games perspective

On track for table tennis player Alexis Lebrun’s first WTT Contender title? The eldest sibling, 20, qualified this Saturday for the final of a tournament organized in Taiyuan, China, equivalent to the ATP 250 tennis tournament.

The 35th-ranked player in the world and the only Frenchman to take part in the event, the table tennis player defeated 29th-ranked Korean Lee Sang-soo in three sets, 11-6, 11-7, 11-2. Alexis LeBrun has put in a string of strong performances since beating Seungmin Cho, Lin Shidong and Kao Cheng-Jui this week to finish 66th, 11th and 32nd respectively in the world rankings.

Already selected to compete in the mixed doubles at the 2024 Paris Olympics alongside teammate Jianan Yuan, Alexis Lebrun renews his quest to qualify for the singles. If his younger brother Felix, ranked 5th in the world, should logically be part of the selection, the second spot would be up for grabs between him and Simon Gauzi, currently ranked 25th in the world. The selection will be made on June 21st, so opportunities to score points will become increasingly rare going forward.

In the final, Alexis Le Brun will face China’s Jingkun Liang (4th in the world), who beat his compatriot Qihao Zhou (28th in the world) 3:1. The meeting will take place this Sunday, May 26, at 12 noon French time. .
