Paris 2024 Olympics: Alexis Lebrun lost in WTT Contender final in Taiyuan

The last step this Sunday was too high for Alexis Lebrun. The 20-year-old French table tennis player could have been dreaming of a first world title, but he lost in the final of the WTT Contender tournament in Taiyuan in China. At home, Jingkun Liang, world number four, did not face any serious difficulties.

While the start of the match was tense and even allowed Alexis Lebrun to take the lead in the match, the eldest of the Montpellier siblings eventually lost in five sets with a score of 1: 12-14, 11-2, 11-8, 11-8, 11. -5.

The only Frenchman in the tournament, tennis’ equivalent of the ATP 250, Alexis Lebrun will, however, pick up valuable points this week in the race to qualify for the Olympics in singles.

Having already qualified in doubles with Jiangnan Yuan, the French champion, he is not yet guaranteed a spot in the men’s tournament, especially since he has fallen in the world rankings in recent weeks. At the start of the week he was in 35th place, while his teammate Simon Gauzi was in 25th place. Table tennis players will be determined on June 21, the day the French selection for the Games is announced.
