Paris 2024 Olympic Games: Arsene Wenger, Germany and the European Parliament… Survive the dying fire in Alsace

This Wednesday I’m going to Alsace for the Olympic flame. For this transition, the relay crossed the region from south to north, the departments of Bas-Rhin and Haut-Rhin combined. Hostilities began in Mulhouse, where legendary former handball goalkeeper Thierry Omeyer was among the bearers of the flame at the Ill stadium.

In the morning, the flames reached the border town of Huninge, where they passed through Germany and then crossed the bridge connecting the two countries. On this occasion, the 2021 German Olympic champion in wrestling, Aline Rotter-Fokken, took part in the relay. Then all these beautiful people went to Colmar and then headed towards Markkolsheim, then Saverne and finally Fleckenstein.

Matt Pokora and Crazy Sally

At the end of the day the program became particularly rigorous: the arrival in Strasbourg was celebrated in the European Parliament before the flames moved on to the hemicycle of the Council of Europe. Arriving in the city center, the relay featured singer Matt Pokora, also a shareholder of Strasbourg basketball club SIG, as well as content creator Sally Pumbga (also known as Crazy Sally). The team relay this time was dedicated to judo and was led by young and promising Ninon Lassalle (18 years old).

The day ended as usual around 7.30pm when legendary former football coach Arsene Wenger lit the cauldron in the middle of Place Kléber. He was born in Strasbourg and is obviously known for his long and successful tenure in charge of Arsenal (1996-2018), but has also coached French clubs such as Monaco and Nancy.

The Olympic torch relay will continue on Thursday in Haute-Marne (52), between Langreme and Saint-Dizier.
