European summit: Meloni confronts Macron and Scholz over distribution of key EU positions

The summit of 27 European heads of state and government, who will meet on Thursday 27 and Friday 28 in Brussels, promises to open in a warm atmosphere. The head of the Italian government, Giorgia Meloni, is outraged by the “oligarchy” of the six leaders – led by the Frenchman Emmanuel Macron and the German Olaf Scholz – who have distributed among themselves key posts (“top positions” in Brussels jargon) of the European Union (EU).

And the Italian leader, who has a tense relationship with the French head of state and whose Brothers of Italy party (post-fascist nationalists) won her country’s June 9 European elections, criticizes “those who argue that citizens are not wise enough to make certain decisions , and that oligarchy is ultimately the only acceptable form of democracy.”
