The Netherlands Prosecutor’s Office announced on Thursday that it has accused the Spartak Moscow footballer and former Sevilla player Quincy Promes of attempted murder for allegedly stabbing his cousin in July 2020.

The stabbing took place after a family party in Abcoude, in late July 2020, and the victim, a cousin of the suspect, suffered serious knee injuries “, confirmed the Prosecutor’s Office in a statement.

The Public Ministry has already sent the investigation file to the lawyers of the parties, so a court in Amsterdam will soon announce the start date of the trial.

Promes could face up to four years in prison for the incident, which took place in a warehouse he owned in Abcoude, a small town fourteen kilometers from Amsterdam.

According to the local press, the soccer player faced his cousin with a knife, accusing him of having stolen money from another member of the family, and other partygoers avoided a greater tragedy by interposing between them.

The player and the victim would later have tried to reach an economic agreement through civilian channels, since the attack would have prevented the second from continuing with his work, but the police received a tip about the incident and arrested the footballer in December 2020.

After giving a statement for more than two days, the 50 times international with the Netherlands was released and denied the facts, assuring, through his lawyer, that he was not present when the stabbing took place.

Ajax, the team for which the Dutch international was playing when he was arrested, sold it two months later to Spartak Moscow for 8.5 million more variable euros, almost half of the 15.7 more variable it paid to Sevilla, team in which he played during the 2018/19 season.
