Diego Godín’s future is far from Italy, where he wears the Cagliari jersey. What’s more, there is an option for the central defender to return to Atlético de Madrid, a club he left in mid-2019. As if that were not enough, if the Spanish formalize the intention, the operation for the Uruguayan will be very simple.

From the outset, the experienced footballer reached an agreement with the Serie A entity so that from 1 January (the start of the winter transfer market in Europe) he can terminate his contract without having to pay a penalty. This deal, according to the newspaper Mundo Deportivo, will benefit both parties.

In this way, Godín can go to the club he wants from the first day of 2022 without problems. In fact, during this period, the defender has been tempted by some clubs. However, the indicated source stated that the decision taken jointly with Cagliari is not related to any formal offer.

Then, the Catalan newspaper indicated that from the surroundings of the ‘Pharaoh’ they announced that the ‘charrúa’ has no problems in sitting down to negotiate to return to the Metropolitan Wanda. What’s more, the 35-year-old admits that financial issues shouldn’t be inconvenient to sign his possible return.

As it is, all that remains is for Atlético de Madrid to dare to take the next step. He did not do it before because the agreement between Godín and Cagliari was recent. So, knowing the position of the Uruguayan international and the conditions that may surround the contract, the operation seems easy to have a history of the club.

The Atlético center-back arrived in the 2010-11 season from Villarreal. In a total of nine campaigns, the South American won a LaLiga trophy, one from the Copa del Rey and another from the Spanish Super Cup. At the European level, he was consecrated twice in the Europa League and two more with the UEFA Super Cup. He was also a two-time finalist in the Champions League, although he lost both times against Real Madrid.

Godín left the ‘Colchoneros’ because they did not reach an agreement for the duration that the renewal contract should have, which was never signed. Then, the former Nacional anchored at Inter Milan and has now moved into the ranks of Cagliari.
