Soon a series on the couple accused of having laundered 4 billion euros in bitcoins

The soap opera started only five years ago, but Netflix is already taking it over. The streaming platform has just announced the preparation of a documentary series on the New York couple accused of having laundered part of the bitcoins stolen during the hack of Bitfinex in 2016, reports Phonandroid this Monday. It is still one of the biggest hacks in the digital currency industry today.

To make this documentary, Netflix called on Nick Bilton, who will take on the role of executive producer, but also the teams behind “Tiger King” or the documentary “FYRE: The Greatest Party That Never Happened”. For the time being, no other clue has been given on the cast or on the release date of the content.

They face up to 25 years in prison.

Netflix’s announcement comes just days after the two defendants were arrested: Ilya Lichtenstein, 34, and Heather Morgan, 31. As a reminder, the two thirty-somethings are suspected of having laundered nearly 4 billion euros in bitcoins. The couple were arrested in Manhattan on Tuesday and taken into custody pending trial.

According to the authorities, the New Yorkers were preparing their escape long before being arrested. A file containing links to fake passports but also a plastic bag with the mention “disposable phones” were found in their belongings. They face up to 25 years in prison. “These arrests and this financial seizure, the largest ever carried out by the ministry, show that cryptocurrencies are not a refuge for criminals”, commented the assistant minister of Justice, Lisa Monaco, quoted in a press release.
