Internet speed: why WIN continues to lead against other operators?

Wi Net Telecom, better known as WIN, prevailed again in the first quarter of 2022 as the firm with the best results in Peru in terms of Internet speed through fixed connections. This according to Ookla’s analysis using its SpeedTest tool.

Why does WIN continue to lead over Claro and Movistar? How much does being a firm that only offers fiber optics help you in the ranking? How does unused cabling prevent them from reaching more users? Do you plan to increase the price of your service in the coming months? We talk about this and more with Victor Jaureguivice president of WIN.

—How do you take being recognized as leaders in Peru in terms of Internet speed through fixed connections?

We are the first Peruvian company that has obtained first place in this ranking and we are proud of what we are achieving. From the beginning, WIN set out to offer Peruvian families the Internet they deserve. This recognition is an incentive to continue investing in the search and creation of communication solutions for all Peruvians.

WIN is very clear about its technological development strategy and we want to be the ones who take Peruvians to enjoy the forefront of telecommunications, serving Peruvian families with a better Internet service.

—According to Ookla, you double the score of traditional providers such as Claro and Movistar. Do your internal reports match these results?

Of course. Our internal reports match the results of SpeedTest and beyond comparing us with other operators; These results help us direct the purpose we have as a company, which is to democratize fiber optics and ensure that more Peruvians enjoy the experience.

—To what do you attribute the first place obtained?

win internet It is 100% fiber optic. In other words, we are natives of this technology, so every connection, from our backbone to the home router, it is pure fiber optics. This makes it possible to ensure a minimum of 70% or 80% of the contracted speed, giving the user the same speed for uploading files as for downloading, and with less latency.

In addition, we have created strategic alliances with leading technology companies that help us ensure the availability of our service.

A very important point is that, by having our own networks, we have total control of the operation.

—What challenges have you had for dedicating yourself exclusively to fiber optics?

Our first challenge was to develop this innovative technology in the country. Before us, Peruvian users had only experienced conventional Internet technologies and it was difficult for them to understand fiber optics. Along this path we had to evangelize users, show them the experience of fiber optics for the home and demonstrate that it is possible to have a symmetrical, quality Internet that provides the speed it offers.

On the other hand, another of the difficulties that arise is that of disused wiring. WIN It reaches all the districts of the capital, but there are areas that we cannot access because there is no space to lay fiber optics. Operators do not remove cables when a customer drops a service and takes the place of another operator. We could reach more Peruvians if the disused wiring was regulated.

– How did you do in the first two years of the pandemic?

When the pandemic hit and we had to do telework and education from home, conventional networks collapsed. The pandemic revealed the user’s needs regarding Internet service, which has now become a right. WIN saw the opportunity to bring the user closer to a digital life without limits, in which the family can carry out their daily activities without taking turns using the Internet so that the network does not collapse. During the two years of the pandemic, WIN added users, due to the technology we offered and today we have coverage in all the districts of Lima with more than 160 thousand contracted plans.

-What are your expectations for this year?

Our goal for 2022 is to reach 300 thousand users, offering Internet with added value. We are very clear about the direction in which we want to point with WIN: to reach all Peruvians by democratizing fiber optics in homes.

What actions do you plan to carry out this year?

As part of WIN’s growth, we have started our expansion nationwide. We are already in cities like Trujillo, Chiclayo, Piura and Chimbote. In addition, we are about to launch new value-added services that have to do with entertainment, security and the Internet of things (home automation).

Do you plan any increase in the cost of the service?

Unlike. Our purpose is to reach more Peruvians and contribute to closing the digital divide. We do not plan to increase the cost of the service, rather we are working on new, more accessible plans so that more people can access our services.
