Meta prepares a “laptop for the face”, in addition to other virtual reality glasses

Meta Platforms plans to launch four new helmets virtual reality (RV) between now and 2024, including Project Cambria, about which new details are known and is described as “a laptop for the face” aimed at professional use.

The metaverse is increasingly present on the agenda of technology companies, especially Meta Platforms, whose roadmap has been advanced by the American media outlet The Information.

Meta’s plans go through the launch of four new VR helmets between now and 2024, according to a source close to the matter cited by the media. One of them will be Project Cambria, the code name for the helmet that combines virtual and mixed reality.

Meta had planned to launch Project Cambria in 2021 but, according to this same source, it has been postponed until the next month of september 2022 due to the problems with the supply chain caused by the pandemic that are weighing down the sector.

On the other hand, Endgaget has echoed this information and added that a second version of Cambria, whose code name is Funston, will be released in 2024.

Furthermore, the leaked roadmap suggests that Meta plans to launch two new Oculus headsets in 2023 and 2024, the year in which it will also market its first augmented reality (AR) headsets.

Cambria is described internally within the company as a “laptop for face” or a Chromebook for the face. Additionally, it will use Meta’s proprietary virtual reality operating system, which is based on Android.

In this way, Cambria is expected to be compatible with online tools and services, as well as some Quest apps. It will also incorporate a high resolution of image quality, to reinforce its commitment to the professional use of the device, according to this medium.

The mixed reality, which combines virtual and augmented reality to create spaces in which to interact with both real and virtual objects and people, will also be present in Cambria. To do this, the helmet will incorporate outward-facing cameras, according to advances.

The document states that Cambria will enjoy greater autonomy than the Oculus Quest 2 by having a larger battery that, for balance reasons, will be integrated into the rear of the device.

As Meta announced in October 2021, Cambria will allow avatars to reproduce eye contact and expressions in real time thanks to the sensors it integrates.

The Cambria’s launch price will be $799, up from $299 for the company’s Quest 2 currently.
