Goodbye long queues? The three trends that would allow the digital transformation of the State

The bureaucracy has generated a distance between the State and the citizenry. The digitization of these services can drastically reduce people’s waiting time, so there are three trends that would help this transformation: big data, artificial intelligence (AI) and the use of the cloud.

Rodolfo Benites, specialist in Public Policies of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), explained that the objective of this technological change is to develop better public policies and services. Also, that this should be at the three levels of government: national, regional and local.

The digital transformation of States does not mean just digitizing government processes. The possibilities opened up by information technologies should lead us to rethink the way in which decisions are made”, commented Benites.

The specialist pointed out that big data favors the preparation of predictive analysis, as well as the performance of simulations. Thus, governments can develop or improve services for citizenswith a more specific approach for each region, city or locality.

For its part, the AI would help expedite immediate solutions. Thanks to self-learning technology, repetitive tasks have been optimized, so it not only makes it more efficient, but also makes it easier to integrate digital components. This is already used for online procedures, such as auto-response bots, and customer service.

Finally, the cloud It helps the information to be shared and reduces the waiting time for citizens. Public institutions no longer have to request the data they need for a process step by step, since they already have access to it immediately.

It is also important for the State to work on an adequate legal and institutional framework to allow the incorporation of the digital in the government.”, assured Benites. The specialist points out that this is fundamental, because when working with companies that provide these services, people’s rights and information must be preserved.

RedPública, an initiative of the UNDP, will hold a virtual and free hackathon at the national level, this June 11 and 12. In this way, those interested can co-design digital solutions with experts that help to face the main challenges of the country. To do this they just have to register on their website.
