Google and Amazon ask the United States for protection for 200 thousand children of technological immigrants

Google, Uber, Amazon and Salesforce asked the government of President Joe Biden for a solution so that at least 200,000 young immigrants can remain in the United States. After turning 21 years of age and, consequently, the protection given by their parents’ visas expires, they would have to leave the country.

In a letter sent to the Secretary of National Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, the technology companies referred to the situation of immigrants who have been in the country thanks to the work visas of their fathers and mothers, but who they must leave when they reach that age if they do not have their own visa. The parents of these young people especially have H1-B visas, for highly qualified personnel and which is common in the advanced technology industry.

The signatories pointed out that the Government, with a program that has deferred deportations known as DACA, has already given protection to hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants brought to the country when they were minors, but it is a solution that has been in judicial limbo. That program began in 2012 during the government of then President Barack Obama (2009-2027), and in 2017 his successor Donald Trump (2017-2021) canceled it. As a result of lawsuits, the program has continued pending a decision in the US Supreme Court.

We now urge policymakers to also address the needs of more than 200,000 young people, children of highly-skilled immigrants, who are at risk of falling through the ins and outs of the immigration system.”, pointed out the letter to Mayorkas.

They also recalled that this year US companies have had at least “11 million job vacancies.” “Many of those openings are for highly skilled positions, and US companies recruit foreign workers to fill labor shortages.”, they added in the letter.

Upon turning 21, the children of these H1-B visa immigrants “face the difficult choice between leaving the country that is their home, or attempting to re-enter the labyrinthine immigration system to obtain a different visa with extremely limited options.” . The fathers and mothers of these young people in turn have to choose to separate from their children or abandon careers and plans to obtain permanent legal residence.as indicated by the group of companies.

The United States, currently with about twelve million undocumented immigrants, and passed its most recent comprehensive immigration reform in 1986, which included an amnesty for nearly 5 million foreigners already in the country. Since then, all attempts in Congress, both with Democratic and Republican governments, have been in vain.
