Google is backpedaling and won’t charge users for viewing videos in 4K, reports 01Net this Wednesday. During the previous fortnight, several Internet users had protested at not being able to freely watch YouTube content in very high definition.
“Premium – Tap to upgrade” was showing under the Quality tab – 2160 pixels, which is 4K. However, this blocked functionality has not been tested on all users or on all media.
The test did not convince
Faced with the discontent expressed by users, the YouTube team posted a tweet last Monday which stated: “We have completely stopped this experience. Users should now be able to access 4K quality resolutions without a Premium subscription. We are here if you have any further questions”.
As suppose 01Net, the platform had probably tried to add an option likely to convince Internet users to subscribe to the Premium subscription. For the sum of 11.99 euros per month, the latter allows you to download videos offline, listen to videos in the background and remove advertising.
The 4K option has been available since 2010 on the YouTube app. It is not essential on the small screen of smartphones, but becomes so to be able to view content on a 4K television.
