To compete with Spotify: Amazon offers its Amazon Music catalog for free and without ads

amazon today announced a new benefit for its Prime members that could turn some subscribers away from other music services, such as Apple Music or Spotify.

According to the TechCrunch portal, the company said that it will now offer subscribers a complete music catalog with 100 million songs, instead of the previous more limited selection of just 2 million songs, and will make most of the best podcasts on its service available ad-free.

Plus, the Amazon Music app is getting a facelift, including a new “Podcast Previews” which will allow customers to listen to short clips as a way to discover new podcasts they might like.

The move is a direct hit on music streaming competitors, especially Spotify, which has been moving into the podcast market as a means of generating additional revenue. But Spotify’s paying subscriber base is increasingly frustrated that they still have to listen to ads on podcasts, despite paying for the service. Amazon Music’s promise of ad-free podcasts coupled with a full music catalog could be a compelling alternative.

However, the arrival of the entire Amazon Music catalog on Amazon Prime does not translate into a transfer of all the benefits of the music service. Users of the latter service will not be able to listen to music completely on demand, but will instead be able to select any artist, album or playlist to start random playback.. Although, yes, they will have the possibility of downloading the contents to listen to them later offline.

If you want to get the full Amazon Music experience, which includes full on-demand playback, high-fidelity sound, and spatial audio, you’ll need to upgrade to Amazon Music Unlimited, the paid tier that competes directly with Spotify, Apple Music for features. or YouTube Music.
