Google creates a secret code that could reduce the hiring of engineers: it creates, repairs and updates itself

Google is working on computer code that, thanks to machine learning, can learn to write, fix, and update itself, Business Insider reports. This could have implications for the future of companies and programmers.

The working group Pitchfork sees is led by Olivia Hatalsky, a longtime employee of Google’s parent company Alphabet’s “X” research unit, who worked on the development of Google Glass and other moonshot projects.

According to internal materials that Business Insider had access to, the project has been created to “teach to write and rewrite the code by yourself”. The tool is designed to learn programming styles and write new code based on those learnings.

According to the aforementioned medium, the original goal of Pitchfork was to create a tool that had the ability to update the Google Python programming language codebase to a newer version.

“The idea was: how can we go from one version to another without having to hire all these software engineers?” said a person familiar with the early phases of the project.

However, with the passage of time, goals shifted toward a multi-purpose system that could reduce the need for humans to write and update codemaintaining its quality, employees who preferred to remain anonymous commented to the technology portal.
