The incredible system that is capable of printing a 55-square-meter house with only resin and cellulose fibers

On Monday, the Center for Advanced Structures and Composites at the University of Maine, in the United States, presented BioHome3D, the first home printed with biomaterials, which reduces its environmental impact and allows it to be recycled.

In this case, it is a 55 square meter house, in which the floor, walls and ceiling are printed with wood fibers and bioresins. This allows it, at the same time, to be a house with excellent thermal insulation that is entirely recyclable, unlike other tests, such as systems that use cement to print houses, with a considerable ecological impact, and a longer time between printing and termination.

BioHome3D also uses recycled wood, and does not require special components; in fact you can take advantage of local woods and you don’t need one in particular. And it’s thought of as a modular system, which is printed industrially, and then assembled on site; In this, too, it differs from systems that use cement, which must prime the house where it will be located, and requires a conventional cement base.

You do need, of course, a special printer: in this case the world’s largest 3D printer was usedwhich in 2019 had already created the largest known printed ship.

The wooden house already built on the campus of the university it was printed in 4 modules, and assembled in half a day, according to its creators. And now it’s equipped with sensors of all kinds to measure how the area supports the winter, which is starting. If for any reason you need a replacement, or its disposal, the entire structure of the house can be recycled as wood.

The University of Maine says this design responds to the vacancy crisis in the United States: according to some reports, 7 million affordable homes are missing in that country.
