What jobs will be able to replace the AI that ‘converse’ with us?

The artificial intelligences (AI) that are capable of texting with people, also known as chatbots, have attracted a large part of the users. An example of this has been AI ChatGPT, famous for answering questions like: how can I become a millionaire? What are the keys to passing an exam? What would be the perfect plan to dominate the world? Having an answer to almost everything, there is a question as to how far this technology will be able to go.

Even big tech companies have at least one project on developing their own chatbot. Such has been the case of Google, Microsoft and Meta, companies that show special interest in incorporating artificial intelligence in the interaction with their users. Under these advances, it is not surprising that these AI manage to maintain fluid conversations with people.

Cesár Beltrán, in charge of the Artificial Intelligence laboratory at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (PUCP), in an interview with Trade has commented that “Chatbots were created specifically for talk to people. The system is programmed to adapt its language to that of human interactions. They have the advantage that they are always available to answer questions or questions. For this reason, companies are increasingly enthusiastic about creating them or using them for their services. It is a way to automate contact with customers or users”.

What uses can be given to chatbots?

Due to the multifunctional technology of chatbots, their functions may vary based on the purpose of their creation. The responses provided by the system (by text or voice) will be related to the information it handles and, in some cases, will be nourished by the conversations you have with users (machine learning).

“In the beginning, when this technology began to be developed, huge amounts of data were needed, and this information was what the system used to respond to each person. Therefore, its uses were more limited, and were generally related to business issues. Now, algorithms developed by artificial intelligence and machine learning allow chatbots to be able to learn. They can intuit the habits and understand the tastes and preferences of the users”, Beltran says.

That is why there are currently no specific functions for this technology, but, on the contrary, its applications are becoming increasingly diversified.

Regarding its possible uses, Beltrán points out: “among the most common uses is Customer Service, since companies use it to automate support responses. However, thanks to advances in artificial intelligence, they can be used for a wide variety of applications and purposes, from entertainment to content creation. It all depends on the purpose for which it was created, and what information has been fed into the system”

According to the information provided by the specialist, among the functions that the AI can perform are the following:

What human labors could these AIs replace?

Beltrán points out that chatbots can replace humans in certain tasks, mainly in customer service and attention. Some of these functions may include:

It is important to note that this technology cannot completely replace humans in all tasks. Often, human intervention is necessary to solve problems or complex situations or to provide a more personalized service.

Beltrán also points out that “In the case of this resource, more than supplanting human labor, it will change the way in which one searches for information. They may be able to replace traditional or virtual encyclopedias to some extent as a source of general information and reference. However, the latter is still not entirely certain.
