Titan of online trading Amazon said Monday it would cut 9,000 jobs, becoming the latest big tech to announce a second round of layoffs.

CEO Andy Jassy said the company has built a significant workforce in recent years, but the uncertain economy has forced it to opt for cost and workforce reductions.

The cuts are aimed at cloud services, advertising and Twitch.

“Given the uncertain economy we live in and the uncertainty that exists in the near future, we have decided to further rationalize our costs and workforce,” Jassy said in a statement on the company’s website.

Last month, Amazon said its operating profit could fall further in the current quarter as the financial impact of consumer and cloud customers who are limiting their spending is taken.

Amazon has reduced or discontinued entire services, such as offering basic virtual services to employers.

In January, Amazon announced it would lay off more than 18,000 employees worldwide, the largest layoff program in its history.

With today’s announcement, the company is the second major tech, after Facebook parent Meta, to announce a second round of cuts.

Last week, Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta announced it would lay off an additional 10,000 employees in a second round of layoffs.

Dozens of tech giants, including Microsoft, which owns Google, Alphabet and Meta Platforms, have cut thousands of jobs in recent months after overstaffing in a pandemic-fueled hiring wave.
