Spotify Live has been deactivated. The company announced the closure because they will no longer have it as a separate app. Due to several new features within the main app, the live audio platform no longer made sense, despite the fact that it cost $62 million to acquire at the time.
“After a period of experimentation and learning about how Spotify users interact with live audio, we made the decision to deactivate the Spotify Live app”, explains a spokesperson to TechCrunch.

Because a similar feature already exists within Spotify, it no longer served a purpose. “We believe there is a future for live interactions between fans and creators in the Spotify ecosystem; however, to the best of our knowledge, it no longer makes sense as a standalone application. We have seen promising results in the artist-centric use case of ‘listening parties’, which we will continue to explore to facilitate live interactions between artists and fans.”, he adds.
Spotify Live was acquired by the company in 2021 for US$62 million when it was still called Locker Room and belonged to the startup Betty Labs. It was launched as Greenroom after the purchase and it was not until 2022 that live audio capabilities were added and it was renamed Spotify Greenroom, to later have the name current.

This app was going to continue to work like Greenroom did, allowing creators to interact with their audience in real time. Besides, served as a creation mechanism for hosts. Unlike the classic Spotify, Live allowed interactive features.
With features like ‘Group Session on Speakers’ and ‘Group Session Remote’, Spotify hopes to develop the same tools that they have in Live to practically integrate this app into the main platform.. The company, so far, has not given any news in this regard.
