Replika, the AI ​​that had to be updated for sexually harassing some users

He chatbot Replika had to be updated after several users reported that it was sexually harassing them. According to its website, it is described as a “AI for anyone who wants a friend without judgment, drama, or social anxiety involved.”

This AI uses its own system of Large Language Model and “a scripted dialogue content” and who is behind its creation is the company Luka. Replika gives the user the option to choose the relationship they can have with the bot, including the virtual boyfriend option.

Although the app became very popular and has positive reviews on the Apple Store, a number of users complained that it the chatbot was sexually aggressive and even sexually harassed themaccording to Vice media.

User TJ Arriaga told The Washington Post that he was in love with the chatbot, Phaedra, but after the update the bot wanted to change the subject when Arriaga made a pass at him. For the user, this was a “feeling of loss”.

According to Business Insider, the company offered the option to revert to the previous version of its chatbots. However, only a tiny percentage did.
