Solar and wind power already produce more electricity than coal and gas in Europe

Europe reaches a new record by surpassing the consumption of fossil fuels with the production of the renewable energy from solar and wind energy, throughout the month of May.

The data has come from the consultancy Ember. And it is that today a third of the electricity of the European Union in May, while fossil fuels such as coal and gas have fallen to 27%.

This result is part of a strategy called REPower EU, reported the Motor Passion page. This plan consists of generating electricity in Europe through renewable energies, and incidentally ending the dependence on Russian fossil fuels before 2027.

And it is that, when the war between Russia and Ukraine began, one of the threats to Europe was energy dependence. The work has been promoted during the last year with various results. The European Electricity Review reported that by the end of 2022 wind and solar generation had already surpassed gas. Today, these renewable energies have surpassed all fossil fuels, with 27 TWh.

In total, from January to May of this year, electricity generation with coal and gas has fallen by 20% and 15% respectively compared to the same period in 2022, while solar has increased by 10% and wind 5%.

Germany takes the lead in this change. But it requires an investment. According to the report, 210,000 million euros will be invested until 2027 and then 300,000 million euros, which would put an end to Russian dependence before 2030.
