The new challenge for streaming platforms is dark movies: they are difficult to watch

Today, the big movie companies are producing movies with an increasingly bleak tone. This characteristic could be due to the fact that these productions are aimed at a more adult audience. However, this fact would be transforming into a challenge to face for the platforms of streaming.

Since they hit the market, one of the constant criticisms of these platforms is that they don’t offer the best quality. Some of them became popular during the pandemic and, in order to save resources, voluntarily reduced the image and sound quality. However, some have been recovering that quality -as has been the case with HBO Max-, but they continue to leave much to be desired compared to other formats.

An example of this that the Xataka medium mentioned was the episode of the eighth season of ‘Game of Thrones’, which turned out to be difficult to watch even on high-quality televisions. ‘The House of the Dragon’ did the same with a naturally lit episode. This concluded that movies and series are darker, televisions are not always the latest generation, and streaming platforms do not broadcast at the best quality to appreciate the nuances in very dark environments.

There are elements that influence image quality and that vary from one platform to another. This last aspect, for example, was what caused difficulties in the dark scenes of ‘Game of Thrones’ for understanding the image.

However, all would not be lost for streaming services. According to some consumers, platforms like Apple TV+ offer significantly higher image quality than others. The 4K streaming options on platforms like Netflix or other improvements that have been added show that this aspect could improve in the future.
