Chrome adds temporary one-time access permission to camera, microphone, and location

The latest version of the browser Google for Desktop includes a change in the privacy section, with a new option called ‘Allow this time’, with which users will enable temporary and one-time browser access to elements such as location, camera and microphone.

Until now, the browser offered two alternatives for permissions on access to the microphone, geolocation and camera: ‘Allow’ and ‘Block’, both permanently. To these is added a third option, that of the ‘X’ to close said notification.

The desktop version of Chrome 116 introduces four options: ‘Allow this time’, which is a temporary permission; ‘Allow on each visit’, which grants those access privileges each time that web page is visited; ‘Don’t allow’, which introduces persistent blocking; as well as the ‘X’, which establishes the temporary blocking of these accesses.

Of this reorganization of the options, the company highlights that ‘Allow this time’ is a temporary permission, also known as a ‘single permission’ whose duration “is limited to the ongoing interaction with a web application”, as Google has expressed in the Chrome developer blog.

The company has recognized that with this option it aims to make it easier for users “use the powerful capabilities of the web on your own terms”, adapt the browser to your needs and communicate the options with “more clarity” thanks to “explicit options”.

Google has also recalled that permissions can be managed from the Chrome Settings section (chrome://settings) or from the browser bar, at the far left of the address, where you can click on ‘Site settings’ to manage permissions for that particular web page.
