Artificial intelligence: why do they ask in the United Kingdom to protect consumers?

The UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) published a report this Monday warning of the dangers to consumers if the burgeoning competition market is not regulated. Artificial intelligence (AI).

The organization warns that if “a handful of firms obtain or consolidate positions of power,” the market may be distorted and not offer the “best products and services” possible to citizens.

At the same time, he emphasizes that “effective competition is not enough to ensure a positive result” from the emergence of new Artificial Intelligence systems.

Other considerations such as security, data protection and intellectual property rights will also be key in the evolution of the sector, the CMA emphasizes in its report.

In the short term, furthermore, the lack of competition can exacerbate citizens’ exposure to “false information, fraud facilitated by AI and false reviews,” adds the regulator.

“The speed at which AI is becoming part of the daily lives of people and companies is dramatic. There is real potential for this technology to boost productivity and make millions of everyday tasks easier,” said Sarah Cardell, CEO of the CMA.

“However, we cannot take a positive future for granted. “There remains a real risk that the use of AI will evolve in a way that undermines consumer trust or is dominated by a few players,” he added.

The body proposed a series of principles that should guide the regulation of Artificial Intelligence, led by the need for developers to assume “responsibility” for the results and information they offer to consumers.

Future regulation must also promote the “diversity” of existing models, both open source and closed source; the “flexibility” of the consumer to choose and change services, which should be “interoperable”, and the “transparency” about the “uses and limitations” of each model, among other guidelines proposed by the CMA.
