Binishell, or the inflatable concrete house: a strange technique that will update construction | VIDEO

The sector of construction is also experiencing technological changes, and one of these is the inflatable concrete house, a technique that appeared in 1964 but that today has been updated to make the greener homes.

This is the Binishell technique which, according to a report from El Español-Omicrono, was invented by the Italian architect Dante Bini. Today, his son Niccolò Bini, who is also an architect and designer, has improved this technique that is used in schools, homes, warehouses, nightclubs or sports venues.

And it has become one of the fastest and most profitable ways to erect dome-shaped structures.

The report details some steps that follow in the building: first, the workers work on the foundations and on them place an inflatable membrane that is filled with air. This will shape the desired house.

This works as a mold that can support weight. Then, a reinforcing framework is installed, and geopolymer concrete, made from fly ash and low-carbon industrial waste, is sprayed.

Bini’s company has not revealed all the materials used, it maintains secrecy. But they assure that the technique respects the environment and reduces energy consumption by 87% compared to that of a conventional house.

In addition, the amount of resources is reduced by 50% compared to traditional structures with equivalent size. They also provide security by having a single, thin frame that distributes the forces throughout the envelope. The proposal is interesting, so much so that Robert Downey Jr. has this type of home on 2,832 hectares in Malibu.
