This is how you can protect your personal information against possible cell phone theft

Crime has put a lot of interest in the mobile phones. There is not a day in which this device that not only keeps us in communication, but also contains all our personal information such as bank accounts, emails, etc. is not stolen.

Given this situation, Osiptel has launched the My safe cell phone campaign, to inform about the security measures that can keep all your information safe.

Tatiana Piccini Antón, director of User Care and Protection, pointed out that one of the first security measures is to activate the PIN code of the SIM card (chip) of our cell phone so that it is not used on another device.

To do this, we must enter the configuration or settings from the cell phone and look for the “SIM card lock” or “SIM pin” option. Then, we must enter the four-digit pin, according to the operating company (for Movistar it is 1234; Entel, 1234; Claro, 1111, and Bitel, 0000). Once this step is completed, we must select “change SIM card pin” and enter a new 4-digit code.

Another preventive action is to disable access to the USB port in order to prevent cybercriminals from manipulating our cell phone software. For USB debugging on Android, we must go to “settings”, “developer options” and “disable: USB debugging”.

He also advised saving our account key linked to the operating system (Google for Android and iCloud for iPhone) in a safe place, never on our phone.

“If our mobile equipment is stolen, we can enter and block the cell phone. In this way, we will prevent the thief from accessing our information and data,” mentioned Piccini Antón.

More safety tips

As preventive actions, we can also create secure passwords in banks and applications with combinations of letters, numbers and symbols; as well as regular backups, and write down the IMEI code of the device in a safe place and do not disclose it. This 15-digit code can be located on the back of the cell phone or in the SIM card support tray, or by dialing *#06# from the cell phone.

We can also activate a second authentication factor to unlock the cell phone (additional code, fingerprint, among others), keep the mobile device updated with ativirus and up-to-date security patches, verify the URLs of websites and analyze the permissions granted when downloading the applications. Finally, let’s be cautious. Let’s not trust calls, messages or social network links.
