CES 2024: cars will now know if their driver is drunk and unable to drive

The automotive components manufacturer Magna presented this Wednesday an integrated system for automobiles which detects drunk drivers through their breath and facial expressions and determines whether they are qualified to drive the vehicle.

The system uses infrared sensors that passively record the levels of alcohol and carbon dioxide in the driver’s breath.

These sensors are capable of detecting alcohol concentration above legal limits (0.08% across the United States except Utah, where the figure is 0.05%).

The other component of the system is a camera which checks if the driver is distractedhis drowsiness and the level of poisoning when observing the Pupils.

According to figures from the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2021 alcohol consumption was related to the deaths of 13,000 people on the country’s roads, a third of the total traffic deaths that year.

The system is being exhibited by Magna at the CES consumer electronics fair in Las Vegas (USA), which concludes on January 12.

At CES, Canada’s Magna, North America’s largest automotive components manufacturer, also introduced a new eDrive electric propulsion system that offers a significant reduction in weight and engine size, better performance and greater driving range.

Magna noted that the new eDrive can be used as the primary propulsion system, or secondary, with a peak power of 250 kilowatts.
