Asylum in Spain: Venezuelans, Colombians and Peruvians represented 78% of requests in 2023

According to provisional data ending on December 31st and published this Thursday by the Spanish Ministry of the Interior, the Asylum and Refuge Office of that Ministry received 163,218 requests for international protection in 2023, a number that places Spain as the third country benefiting from international protection in the European Union.

Three Latin American countries accounted for 78.6% of registered processes: Venezuela, with 60,534 requests, accounts for 37% of the total, followed by Colombia, with 53,564 requests, and Peru, with 14,306.

By reception location, the Community of Madrid leads the list with the most requests, with 52,684, followed by Andalusia (25,948) and Catalonia (14,775).

Last year, the Ministry of the Interior resolved a total of 92,963 international protection cases, which represents an increase of 1.8% compared to the previous year.

7,521 refugee statuses granted, highest number ever

During this period, 7,521 refugee statuses were granted, also a record number to date and representing 26.5% of all those granted by the Office of Asylum and Refuge since 2012.

The most granted nationalities were those from Afghanistan, Syria, Nicaragua, Colombia and Honduras.

In 2023, subsidiary protection was processed for 3,850 people, mainly from Mali, and 41,478 citizens, mostly Venezuelans, obtained residence and work permits for humanitarian reasons.

According to these figures, the rate of recognition of refugee status and subsidiary protection is 12.23% and that of international protection is 56.85%.

195 thousand displaced by the war in Ukraine with temporary protection

According to the Ministry of the Interior, its Office of Asylum and Refuge granted the temporary protection regime to 33,928 people in 2023, which brings to almost 195 thousand the number of citizens displaced by the Russian invasion of Ukraine who are covered by this number in Spain .

The Spanish Government launched this emergency procedure in March 2022, days after the start of the war.

Over the course of this year, which has just ended, 953 requests for recognition of stateless status were also presented and 1,022 files related to this procedure were resolved, aimed at identifying those people who are not considered nationals by anyone. of nationality.
