Around the world in eight days thanks to hydrogen – Bertrand Piccard’s new bet

He always has a frank look, balanced words and that irresistible Lausanne accent. Eight years after his historic world tour at the controls of the Solar Impulse, Bertrand Piccard plans to do it again. But this time, the “scientist”, a psychiatrist and a pilot, will pilot a hydrogen-powered aircraft: the Climate Impulse.

“The solar device has been an important symbol of clean and almost eternal energy, but aviation primarily needs solutions that can carry many people on long journeys. And hydrogen is likely the future of carbon-free aviation,” he explains. As proof, the entire elite of aeronautics – Airbus, Daher, Capgemini and ArianeGroup – support this new project… “while they looked down on us because of the solar pulse,” he mischievously recalls.
