Disney invests US$1.5 billion in Epic Games to create a universe of games and entertainment

disney will expand the universe of its main franchises with the help of the development studio Epic Games, with a proposal that will allow the construction of “a persistent, open and interoperable ecosystem” from Fortnite.

Disney and Epic Games maintain a collaboration for years which has allowed franchises such as Star Wars, Marvel to be brought to Fortnite, with the integration of content, seasonal collaborations and live events.

Epic’s graphics engine, Unreal Engine, is at the base of games such as Kingdom Hearts 3 and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and has been used in the editing and animation of films and streaming content.

This collaboration has now been expanded to create “a completely new universe of games and entertainment “which will further expand the reach of beloved Disney stories and experiences,” as they reported in a statement.

This new universe will also be powered by Unreal Engine and will offer “a multitude of opportunities for consumers to play, watch, buy and interact with content, characters and stories from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, Avatar and more.”

“We are collaborating on something completely new to build a persistent, open and interoperable ecosystem that will unite the Disney and Fortnite communities,” said Epic Games CEO and founder Tim Sweeney.

Likewise, Disney will invest $1.5 billion to acquire an equity stake in Epic Games. The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals.
