WhatsApp: chats will soon work with other encrypted messaging applications

WhatsApp works on interoperability with other platforms so that its users can communicate with others on third-party platforms, such as Signal and Telegram, without the need for them to have a Meta account; a feature that would respond to the obligations imposed by the Digital Markets Act (DMA).

The Digital Markets Law establishes new rules for technology companies – among them, Meta, Apple and Google – considered as controllers or ‘gatekeepers’ of the market, by which they must assume a series of obligations and prohibitions that guarantee fair competition in the digital sector.

The function that WhatsApp is now working on, therefore, would respond to one of the duties imposed by the European DMA, which obliges these companies to enable communication between different platformsas WaBetaInfo recalls.

This specialized portal has now discovered that the messaging service developed by Meta has introduced a new tab called ‘Third-party chats’. in the latest beta update of WhatsApp for Android 2.23.19.8, available on Google Play.

Thanks to this interoperability, users of platforms other than those developed by Meta, such as signal either Telegramthey will be able to contact WhatsApp without having to download the application and without being required to have an account for this application.

WaBetaInfo remembers that Meta must allow the rest of the messaging applications to be compatible with your service before March 2024, the deadline for these companies to catch up with the obligations provided for in said regulation.

It should be remembered that in the event that the established deadline is not met, Europe could fine WhatsApp 10% of the company’s global business volume and up to 20% in the event of a repeat offense.
