Peter Jackson sells his special effects studio to Unity, a company interested in the “metaverse”

The New Zealand filmmaker Peter Jackson, director of the trilogy of “The Lord of the rings”, announced on Wednesday the sale of its special effects firm Weta Digital to a US company interested in using it to develop the “Metaverso”.

The buyer Unity Software, based in San Francisco, indicated that the $ 1.6 billion operation will “Define the future of the metaverse”, an immersive 3D version of the internet called to transform work and online interactions.

The firm noted that Weta’s technology, used in hits like “The Lord of the Rings” and “Avatar”, would allow its subscribers Create your own ultra-realistic corner of a virtual world.

“We are excited to democratize these tools and bring the genius of Sir Peter Jackson and Weta’s amazing engineering talent to artists everywhere.”, the president of Unity said in a statement, John Riccitiello.

Under the agreement, Unity will take over the technology and engineering units of Weta Digital, based in Wellington, while Jackson will retain majority ownership of a company called WetaFX, of special effects for the cinema.

Jackson said the opportunity to use Weta’s innovative programs was transformative for the work of the creative industries.

“Together, Unity and Weta Digital will be able to create a path for any artist, in any industry, to use these incredibly powerful and creative tools.”he declared.

It is anticipated that the metaverso become an online platform that makes virtual experiences, such as chat or attend a concert, they feel like it’s face to face.

The issue gained attention in October when Facebook changed the name of its relative company to “Meta” to reflect the commitment of its founder, Mark Zuckerberg, to the concept.

Zuckerberg’s firm announced plans to hire 10,000 people in the European Union to build the metaverse., while other technological actors rush to have a presence in that cybernetic world.
