There will be six more weeks of winter in U.SPunxsutawney groundhog Phil predicted as he emerged from his burrow on Wednesday to perform his Groundhog Day duties.

Thousands of people gathered at Gobbler’s Knob, Pennsylvania, as members of the “inner circle” of Punxsutawney Phil they called to him from his tree stump at dawn to find out if he had seen his shadow. After the prediction of Philthe crowd repeatedly shouted “six more weeks!”.

According to tradition, spring would come early if the Groundhog didn’t see his shadow.

Last year, the event was held virtually due to the coronavirus pandemic, depriving the community, which is about 65 miles (105 kilometers) northeast of Pittsburgh, of the boost they provided to tourists.

The event was broadcast live and at one point was watched by more than 15,000 viewers worldwide. Some 150 “cardboard” people were there to “see”.

The annual event has its origin in a German legend about a furry rodent.

According to records dating back to 1887, Phil has predicted winter over 100 times. 10 years were lost because records were not kept, organizers said.

The 2020 forecast said that spring would come early.
