Macron talks with Biden before his meeting with the Russian leader

The French President, Emmanuel Macronhis American counterpart spoke again Joe Biden on Sunday, by phone, the day before his meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin to discuss the crisis in Ukraine, the Elysee reported.

This 40-minute telephone exchange is part of a “logic of coordination”, according to the presidency, before the French president travels to Moscow and then, on Tuesday, to Kiev, where he is scheduled to meet with Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski .

Macron said he would “discuss the terms of the de-escalation” on the border with Ukraine, where the West accuses Moscow of massing tens of thousands of troops for a potential invasion.

Russia rejects these accusations and assures that it only wants to guarantee its safety.

Throughout the weekend, the French president also discussed with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, the head of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, and the leaders of the three Baltic countries.

Macron had already met with his American counterpart on Tuesday and both leaders affirmed on that occasion “their support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.”

“We will not get unilateral gestures” from Russia “but it is essential to avoid a deterioration of the situation before building reciprocal mechanisms and gestures of trust,” Macron told the French weekly Journal du Dimanche.
