Majority of Canadians oppose anti-vaccine protests that paralyze Ottawa

More than 60% of Canadians oppose the protests that have been held for 11 days by the anti-vaccine movement and radical groups in the capital, Ottawato protest against the measures to contain the pandemic, according to a survey released this Tuesday.

The survey, carried out by the firm Leger360, indicates that 62% of Canadians oppose the so-called “Freedom Convoy” that on January 29 attracted Ottawa more than 3,000 trucks and between 10,000 and 15,000 protesters.

Since then, a group of about 200 trucks and several hundred people have remained around the Parliament building in the Canadian capital, blocking streets and protesting day and night with the horns of their vehicles.

According to the survey, 32% of Canadians express some type of support for the protesters who have declared that they will not leave Ottawa until the Canadian authorities rescind all limitations imposed by the covid-19.

Leger said 65% of those surveyed believe the “Freedom Convoy” represents only a tiny minority of “selfish Canadians.”

Leger’s poll was conducted among 1,546 Canadians from February 4-6 and has a 3% margin of error.

Another survey also released this Tuesday, and carried out by the firm Abacus, shows greater opposition to anti-vaccines among the inhabitants of Ottawawho are suffering the consequences of the prolonged protest.

Abacus said that only 22% of the inhabitants of the capital support the “Freedom Convoy” and that 67% oppose it. 11% did not express any opinion about the protest.

In addition, 87% of those surveyed said that the protesters have had time to express their views and that the time has come for them to abandon their occupation of the center of the Canadian capital.

The Abacus survey was conducted by interviewing 500 residents of Ottawa between February 4 and 7 and has a margin of error of 4.3%.

On Monday night, in an emergency debate in the House of Commons of Parliament, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau declared that after more than a week of occupation of the center of Ottawathe protest “has to stop” and the protesters have to return to their homes.

Trudeau also claimed that the protest is “blocking” Canadian democracy and the Canadian economy.
