Tragedy in Florida: a woman died after falling from a drawbridge that opened unexpectedly in Palm Beach

A woman was riding her bicycle across a drawbridge when it began to rise before she could reach the other side, causing her to fall to her death, authorities said. Florida.

The woman was walking with the bicycle through the bridge between Palm Beach and mainland Florida, heading towards West Palm BeachSunday afternoon, and was three meters from the barrier that obstructs traffic when the bridge began to risethe police informed the local press.

“The woman tried to hold on. There was a passerby near her who tried to help her, but tragically fell from a height of five or six stories to the pavement and died”said Mike Jachles, a spokesman for the police of West Palm Beach.

Authorities will investigate why the bridge began to rise before the barrier loweredJachles said. The bridge operator is “shocked” by what happened, the Palm Beach Post reported..

The Florida Department of Transportation manages the bridge, but the operators are employees of a private company.

“Palm Beach is only accessible by three bridges and this is the main one, so it’s used a lot by cyclists,” Juan Orellana, a bicycle safety activist, told West Palm Beach station WPTV.

The bridge has an alarm system to warn drivers and pedestrians before rising.

“First of all you are going to hear the alarms before the barrier goes down, so if the alarms go off you have to get out of there before the bridge goes up”, he added.

Authorities did not release the woman’s name. The bridge was closed for more than six hours after the accident.
