The Bandung District Court, West Java Province, found Herry Wirawan guilty of raping 13 schoolgirls, all of whom were minors, eight of whom became pregnant.

At trial it was revealed that he raped minors for five years. Many of them came from poor homes and went to school on scholarships.

The abuse came to light when a student’s family reported Wirawan to police for raping and impregnating their teenage daughter last year.

The revelation sparked national outrage, with President Joko Widodo paying close attention to the case, according to a senior government official.

The defendant was “found guilty of forcing girls to have sex with him when he was their teacher” and “sentenced to life in prison,” chief judge Yohannes Purnomo Suryo Adi said.

The victims, most of whom came from poor families and lived in the Islamic boarding school he had founded, were assaulted over a period of five years, the trial revealed.

Wirawan, 36, arrived in court in handcuffs and kept his head down as Judge Yohannes Purnomo Suryo Adi sentenced him to life in prison.

She asked the judge for leniency to allow her to raise her children.

The court also determined that the compensation of the victims for the damages suffered will be the responsibility of the government.

In Indonesia there are more than 25,000 Islamic boarding schools with nearly five million students.

The Bandung rape case highlighted the problem of sexual abuse in schools, which accounted for 14 of the 18 cases reported last year to the National Child Protection Commission.
