Likewise, the presidents of Poland, Andrzej Duda, and of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, and the president of the European Council, Charles Michel.

As the president of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen, had advanced at the end of the term, they confirmed her concern because “the situation in and around Ukraine continues to be threatening”.

“Everyone is clear that the Minsk agreements are the only possible way to solve the conflict”Elysee sources said about that pact signed in February 2015 by Putin and the then Ukrainian president, Petró Poroshenko.

From France they urged to take with great caution and to verify all the information on the situation on the ground. “In this period of high volatility (there is) a high risk of manipulation,” the sources said.

According to the same sources, “everything must be done to avoid a confrontation”that would change the geostrategic reality in Europe and maintain for this “All channels of dialogue with Russia are open.”

The European partners stressed again that a Russian invasion of Ukrainian territory under Ukrainian government control would trigger “massive sanctions”.

From Paris it is believed that it is up to Putin to act, “either to negotiate or to provoke”but they did not take a firm position on the possibility of an invasion.

“Everyone has their information. To believe or not to believe is not a diplomatic method. We can bet there will be an invasion or not, but none of us, none of the leaders who have spoken tonight, are in Putin’s head.”sustain the Elysée fountains.

“We must act to avoid the moment when everything changes. Diplomacy is still possible.”they added, also praising the “cold blood” of the Ukrainian authorities and making it clear that the response to an eventual invasion of that country will be “hard”.
