Japan and Australia announce sanctions against Russia for its actions in Ukraine

Australia announced this Wednesday (Tuesday night in Peru) the first round of sanctions against Russia after Moscow recognized the independence of the self-proclaimed breakaway republics of Donetsk and Lugansk in eastern Ukraineand order the deployment of the military in those two enclaves.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison explained that Australia will prohibit the entry of eight members of the Russian security council, to whom it will apply financial sanctions, in addition to sanctions against industries from various sectors such as energy, mining and hydrocarbons in Donestsk and Lugansk, as well such as banking institutions such as the VEB and the Russian military bank, among others.

With this measure, Australia follows in the footsteps of its allies such as the United States and the United Kingdom.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said today that his country will implement a series of sanctions against Russia after Moscow recognized the independence of the self-proclaimed breakaway republics of Donetsk and Lugansk in eastern Ukraine and ordered the deployment of assets military in both enclaves.

In an appearance before the media, Kishida again condemned Russia’s “violation of international law” and announced that visas will be suspended and funds will be frozen from those two Ukrainian separatist territories, which will be subject to a trade embargo, in addition to blocking the new Russian sovereign debt issues on Japanese markets.

Kishida said that these sanctions, which are in line with those approved on Tuesday by the US and the European Union (EU), will enter into force “as soon as possible” once the details of them are finalized.
