Zelensky willing to negotiate with Russia, but not in Belarus, as the Kremlin proposes

the president of UkraineVolodymyr Zelensky said on Sunday that his country is willing to talk with Russia, but rejected that the talks be in Belarus as the Kremlin spokesman had proposed shortly before.

“Warsaw, Bratislava, Budapest, Istanbul, Baku. We propose any of these”, the president stated in a video posted on the internet.

“And any other city in a country that doesn’t launch missiles at us is fine for us.”said the 44-year-old president, accusing Belarus of serving as a platform for Moscow to invade against Ukraine.

The video of Zelensky was released shortly after Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Russian news agencies that Moscow had sent a delegation to open negotiations in Gomel, a southeastern Belarusian city near the borders of Russia and Ukraine.

A delegation of representatives of “the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Defense and other services, including the presidential administration, arrived in Belarus for negotiations with the Ukrainians,” said the Peskov.

“We will be ready to start these negotiations in Gomel,” he added.

On Thursday, the president Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine which has cost the lives of around 200 civilians and has provoked international condemnation and sanctions against Moscow.

Moscow wants the surrender of the Ukrainian forces and to depose its pro-Western government so that the territory is “neutral”, conditions considered unacceptable by Kiev.

On Sunday, in a televised speech, Putin showed “special gratitude to those who these days are heroically fulfilling their military duty in the development of a special operation to offer assistance to the population of the republics of the donbas”.
