Thousands of civilians, some without military training, decided to take up arms and joined various territorial defense groups. To be distinguished, these volunteer fighters wear yellow armbands.

“Some exchanged their pens and keyboards for weapons,” says a Ukrainian parliamentarian, who is now part of these armed groups.

This civil resistance has helped keep the main cities, such as Kiev or Kharkiv, still under the domination of the Ukrainian government.
